Yoga Retreat in Umbria with Sommer and Paul Sobin

8 Days of Yoga, History, Food and Good Company
Sept. 25- Oct. 3, 2017

Join Sommer and Paul for another magical experience in the Italian countryside. Our retreats in Umbria have been a unique and deepening experience, surrounded by the sacred energy of the ancient landscape. In the autumn season, the golden light, fresh morning air and smell of ripening olives, home cooked food, and some of the best wine in Italy all conspire to create an unforgettable and profound experience. The retreat includes daily, all levels yoga classes, meditation, pranayama, seasonal local meals, guided trips through the surrounding region and much more. The retreat will be held at the Borgo della Marmotta, a small village and mill that flourished from the 14th to 17th centuries. The venue is just over 2 hours north of Rome, near the town of Spoleto, in the medieval village of Poreta. At Borgo della Marmota participants will discover the pleasures and treasures of Umbria in an authentic, slow food and slow living Italian environment.

Regional and Retreat Information:

Umbria is known as the spiritual green heart of Italy from both Christian and pagan times. It was the land that inspired historical spiritual figures such as Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica, Saint Rita and Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi. We will visit Santa Maria degli Angeli where the first church of the Franciscan Order still stands and the city of Assisi, with its beautiful frescoed Basilicas. The pilgrimage trail of Saint Francis passes through the area, directly through Poreta in fact, so you can take personal walks near the retreat center during free time. Above Spoleto we will enter the sacred woods and grottos of Monteluco, a very special and ancient forest of the original Umbri where St. Francis, Saint Anthony of Padua and others, worshiped as well as many pantheists before them. Today Umbria is naturally by tradition the center of the slow food and slow living movement in Italy and home to the original arts, thearter and dance “Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds”. Along with exploring the heart and culture of this incredible region, Sommer and Paul will bring the amazing experiences back to the mat with daily yoga classes, guided meditation sessions, breath-work practices, and offer inspiring Tantric based philosophy talks. In this idyllic setting participants will have the opportunity to rest, restore, and engage in a full list of unique offerings.

The Borgo della Marmotta is built from a farming village and mill dating from the 14th-17th centuries and its one-of-a-kind charm has remained constant for centuries. A very attentive restoration was recently completed and the architectural details revealed the ancient rural function of this tiny village. The square, the stables, the sheepfold, the mill, the granary and the great outdoor courts were once essentials tools for life in the countryside and are all on display. Besides the elegance and comfort, the Borgo della Marmotta offers hospitality based on the principle of feeling at home. The gentle landscape, the elegance and comfort of the interiors, and the hospitality derived from an ancient tradition all make the Borgo della Marmotta the ideal location to discover Umbria.

The rooms at the Borgo della Marmotta are ‘shared’ between two people, unless opting for the private room rate.  All rooms have a private bathroom and most are equipped with a shower and some with a bathtub. All room have Hair dryers. Rooms are spacious, lit and decorated in a simple & elegant style. All the bedrooms feature the charming elegance of the common spaces. Only natural pigments and material were used for the walls, while the colors of the linens vary in each room giving each one its own style. Some rooms have canopy beds, others have beds in pastel linens that reflect the colors of curtains and armchairs. Aarchitectural elements retained in the restoration merge with elements of modern design, giving a result of extreme comfort and refinement. Each room provides air conditioning, heating, internet access, a tray with tea and coffee, and a minibar.

As if you’ve stepped back in time into an Italian countryside dream you will enjoy lounging in the cobblestone courtyards, frolicking in the beautifully maintained grassy valley underneath ancient trees, soaking your body in the modern pool, and dining family style outdoors surrounded by the beautiful fall foliage. This unique setting gives us an opportunity to move slowly, rest deeply, and breathe in the spiritual energy of the Spoleto Valley. Other offerings include a communal livingroom space and a dining room with fireplace, 2 yoga practice spaces, and a shop with local, organic goods produced in the valley.
